After a year of loss, hatred and anguish – Vampire Weekend’s own Chris Baio answers our agony with Philosophy!.
2016 was a shit storm. No one can deny it and no one can hide it. It was a detrimental year for everyone, if not personally, then definitely universally. But, Baio lends a favor through victorious track, Philosophy!.
Its triumphant melody poses a conflicting memory to the lyrics, ‘there’s nothing that I’d rather do, than sit and talk philosophy, but I’m thinking that you are thinking, you and me are through,’ his soft voice gleams over lyrics.
The track comes as the first hint to Baio’s sophomore album, Man of the World. Speaking of the record, Chris explains
“Writing ‘Man of the World’ was my way of processing 2016, a year that began with the death of my favorite artist, David Bowie, and ended with the greatest political disruption of my adult life – all while I was a nomad, an American living in London, touring two continents, never fully of either place. It’s partially about being trapped in my own head, obsessing about things it was too late to change, feeling afraid and guilty and alone. It’s also my attempt to document a certain sense of loss that felt both intensely personal and like part of a larger collective experience many were going through at once.“
He opens a hand to hold through this glistening piece of pop, something much needed to the current chaos of this (and last) year. Listen to Philosophy! below.
