Guitar-driven tracks lead Glasgow based, The Van Ts, into their distinctive grunge-pop sound.

Bitter and blood thirsty, yet sugar-sweet at the same time. The four piece present themselves through dual-toned vocals, pulsing drums and boisterous bass lines, an inflection of their own genre.

Ahead of their set on the King Tuts stage this Saturday, we sat down with Chloe and Sean of The Van T’s to chat nicknames, festival tips and what’s next for the Glasgow based band.

For someone just discovering you guys how would you sum up your sound?

C: Fun and melodic I guess!

S: Definitely noisy, reverby…

C: Yeah that’s quite good actually. It’s quite fast moving sometimes and others not so much

S: Just always moving

How did the name of the band come about?

C: Basically we have some Dutch relatives and thought it’d be funny to sort of include that – so our middle name is Van and last name Thomson so I guess that somehow turned into The Van Ts

Best and worst nickname you’ve ever been given?

C: For me personally, “Hoey”. I don’t know why it became a thing but I guess it rhymes with Chloe? Didn’t really like it and it didn’t catch on

S: “Seaniqua”. I’d say that’s the best and worst nickname I’ve ever had

What was the first record you ever bought?

C: I never bought it, but I acquired a Blondie album to start with then went onto buy Aha Shake Heartbreak by Kings of Leon which was pretty cool, I really liked them back in the day

S: Think mine was Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park as well as The Marshall Mathers LP

What was the last song you listened to?

C: Funnily enough the song we were covering today – Climbing Up The Walls by Radiohead

S: Ha – me too!

What excites you most about TRNSMT Festival?

C: To be honest, the music will be so good but the fact so many of our pals are going so it’s just going to be a big weekend out and I can’t wait! To play as well obviously!

S: The fact this is it’s first year happening is pretty exciting I think

What’s the best and worst festival tip you’ve ever had/and or given?

C: “This poncho will do you the full weekend”

S: “You don’t need a tent”

Top 3 moments you’re still to tick off the bucket list?

C: Do a lot more travelling and play The Barrowlands definitely

S: I want to ride around London in a blue suit on a micro-scooter

Ultimate guilty pleasure?

C: Ah easy I’ve got loads, probably Belinda Carlise or maybe Cher

Lastly, what’s up next for The Van Ts?

C: Lot’s of things that I can’t really announce right now because my manager would kick my arse

S: Got loads of festivals coming up!

C: And the new single Fresh Meat!
